Is this normal for a psychiatrist?

17f So basically I went to a psychiatrist to get diagnosed cause I've been struggling with ocd since I was 4, I went through almost every theme and now my worst ones are real event ocd and POCD they made my life a living hell for the past 1.5 years, destroyed my life basically. I come in and my mother for some reason went with me even though I asked her not to. And the first thing the psychiatrist does is asks my mother "Do you have a full family or are you divorced and who is she living with?" Like the first question, and then spent 10 minutes talking to my mother, I couldn't say anything and my mother said enough of weird stuff because of which I wasn't gonna be taken seriously, I almost started crying then i said that I don't want to continue the visit and left. Idk maybe I'm dramatic but it's the second time therapist/psychiatrist asks random questions about my family like "are your parents alcoholics?" when I haven't even mentioned my parents (spme therapists i went to a year ago), and this time the first ever question was about my parents marriage situation? Like I wanted to talk about my ocd I had since I was 4 it has fucking nothing to do with my parents divorce so I just got nervous and left So I'm wondering like is this a normal first question to ask or is it weird...?

If you are under the age of 18 and in certain areas, yes. And psychiatrists ask everyone weird questions. If you don’t want your mom in with you, then state that and see what they all say. Or look up where you live and see the law/s about it. Some they can’t be in with you, others they must be.

Yeah I understand that they can ask weird questions, but it felt extremely random. Like she didn't ask why did I came or what is my problem, the first question was about my parents marriage situation...

@emma345 Psychiatrists will ask odd stuff to us but they are trying to dig deeper into stuff. It doesn’t always work regarding those with OCD though.

Yeah, I understand that. I also understand that they may ask weird questions to understand my background. It's was just super weird it was like the first question. No "What brings you here" or something. Just immediately asking my mum about her marriage situation.

I would feel invisible too. It sounds like he didn’t do a very good job acknowledging you or the fact it’s your session. I think he was trying to do things efficiently by getting information he deemed important, but it wouldn’t have hurt to acknowledge you and try to build some trust there

How NOCD First Session Goes

Im wanting to set up an appt with a therapist but I am on the borderline. I’ve seen some bad Google reviews of people saying the therapists are required to do “small talk” but don’t get into the route of the issue right away. Is this normal? I just want help with my Pure OCD as soon as possible without wasting too much time on unnecessary things and get myself to feeling better.

I have a question.

I had my second session with a therapist and they told me they don’t think I have OCD. They think that I have just intrusive thoughts. They also said they don’t do diagnosis. I also noticed they did not ask me questions about my different themes.This has made me so confused. Even though I had a terrible fear that a therapist will tell that I don’t have it, (which is the main reason why I had not gone to one) I did suspect I had it because I identify with many of the symptoms. On the website it says that they treat it but I don’t think they are like a specialist. On the first session they described OCD mainly as needing to have things symmetrical and fear of contamination. I have a feeling that they don’t know much about it. I also didn’t mentioned all the themes I think I have because I’m scared to be misunderstood. I am not sure what to do. I can’t afford seeing an OCD therapist at NOCD. Can anyone give an insight, has something similar happened to you? Thank you!

Question to everyone here

Hey everyone I am new here. I had my third session here and I am quite confused — one of my therapist told me that what I was talking about was not about ocd and quickly shut me down. I am not going to lie when he said that I felt really bad and was too embarrassed to ask him if our conversations are exclusively about ocd. Are they? Thx guys 💕💕💕
