hey, i have been taking SSRIs/SNRIs for years now. DONT BE SCARED! people always say “oh the medication changed me so much” or “i’m a zombie now that i’m taking meds”…anything is possible and while you’re looking for the med that works for you, you might experience some unpleasant side effects but ultimately, when you start taking the right medication you get a lot more of your life back. magic pills don’t exist but with the tools from therapy & medication, you can have the possibility of a new, healthier outlook on life and hopefully feel more like yourself and less like your mental health issues dominate you. i hope this helps!
do not be scared! i’m on prozac (5 years) it genuinely changed my life and i don’t know if i would be here without it
I have similar fears. I started Zoloft yesterday. Ngl, I feel a little muddy right now. But do you know what else I felt today? Joy and happiness. Pride in my daughter. She did something today that before yesterday would have sparked so much anxiety, but today I was able to pause and marvel at her strength. When I got home, I cried because I realized that I have never experienced such a positive emotion before today. That my positives have always been smothered under anxiety and distress. I don’t know if I am on the right one as it takes time to figure out what works best. But I can tell you the fog and tiredness I am feeling is worth that joy I felt today.
I’m on an snri and have taken ssris. Some did make me feel weird but as soon as I told my therapist I switched and I feel good now. Sometimes it works better for others, I know people who love their ssris and didn’t like snris. Everyone’s different, just make sure you feel good and better, never worse. Sometimes being uninformed can make you feel scared, I do research and talk to my cousin (who’s a nurse and my best friend). Also your psychiatrist can tell you what they do, I was scared so I asked a lot of questions and that’s ok.
Getting on medicine has saved and changed my life for the better! It can be scary to try something new and experience potential side effects, but with therapy and not giving up on finding the right medication and dose for you, your life will get SO much better! I’ve also felt zombie-ish on some medications, but you can always change meds and doses! And it took me 6 medications before I found the one that works best for me (Prozac)!
Don’t be afraid of SSRI’s, I take a 300mg and I assure you I’m not a zombie.
They did for me personally. Just dumbed me down. Didn’t help my ocd personally.
It changed me so much, became a shell of myself, tried 3 or 4 different types and they all did the same just slightly different. Anyone who’s telling you don’t fear and to try it don’t actually know how bad they can affect some people. You have to be really careful- because when you feel like it’s time to get off, weening is extremely important or you could hurt yourself. I finally successfully weened myself off after 5 years of trying and it’s extremely difficult having to learn how to process and deal with my ptsd and anxiety but it’s SOOO worth it to live as a whole person without being emotionally blunted. Humans are capable of healing and they are capable of extraordinary things you just have to ask for the right help and actually want to change.
