My therapist said do something illegal as ERP

There is definitely a line not to cross with ERP.

As someone mentioned earlier, there is a line to not cross when it comes to ERP. My suggestion would be to write it down and the possible consequences that could come with it and sit with the feeling. What I mean by this is write down a scenario down. From there you can create your response message.

I can relate and I’m sorry — I know what it’s like to be the only person at work (or just everyday life) trying to follow all the rules. I never understood how ERP was going to help me in the long run when the world and systems we have to interact with are full of people who don’t do the right thing. Even though there are laws and policies in place, it just seems like everyone else picks and chooses what they want to abide by and gets by with accepting a certain level of risk. So for treatment, I never understood how anything would help me live more sustainably in this world. That’s why I can’t really hold a job or interact with people. So I really do feel for you and I’m sorry I don’t know what the answer is. Getting diagnosed with autism and adhd helped me understand myself better. But I still don’t have the answers. When I was considering getting an autism diagnosis one provider told me that basically if I’m autistic I would have to learn to become less rigid or find a place in society where I can fit better. So idk. I’m an engineer. I was supposed to be a medical doctor. Those were just not possible with my conditions. So I’ve tried other jobs (more entry level) and I’ve still struggled. So idk. Not to mention how much money and time I’ve already invested in my career. What can I do? I just want you to know that you’re not alone. I hope you can find a provider that understands you and can offer better support. You’re not alone.

Hmmm I actually never heard of that. I know with ERP therapists are supposed to make face those fears. My counselor accused me of the thoughts I had, and he did things like calling me names and telling me maybe you’re evil, and I just had to sit with the feelings without seeking reassurance. Not gonna lie, it helped a lot because the brain is just tricky for some reason and you have to play with it and do what it tells you to get rid of it. However I think there are limits to how far we go with ERP. Did your therapist actually tell you to physically do the things that’s illegal or just visualize that you did it and convince your mind that you did?
