Can an OCD compulsion or ritual ever get completely finished?
Hi Everyone, I understand that when someone with OCD performs a compulsion or ritual, the anxiety may decrease temporarily, but then new doubts often appear, such as “Did I do it correctly?”, “Was something missing?”, or “Do I need to add another rule?” These doubts can then lead the person to perform the compulsion again. But I’m wondering whether the opposite can ever happen, even if it is extremely rare. Could someone with OCD perform a ritual or compulsion, realize that it was somehow complete, and then genuinely have no further urge to repeat it — not just for a few hours or days, but permanently? In other words, could there ever be a situation where someone performs a compulsion one final time, feels that they have completely finished it, and then never feels the need to perform that particular compulsion or ritual again, even in the long term? And perhaps the obsession connected to it eventually disappears as well? I’m not asking whether this is a good way to treat OCD. I’m specifically wondering whether this kind of experience can actually happen sometimes in people with OCD — where a compulsion genuinely feels completely resolved and the person never feels the need to repeat it again.
