I totally understand this. What I have learned is that it's OK to just take a little bit of the Bible every day, if that's at the stage where we are right now. Even if it's just five verses that comfort you about your OCD, and you just have those for the day, that's just fine. Sometimes we actually need to read our Bible LESS when we have OCD. That sounds wrong to say. But sometimes reading in the Bible can be hard for us. We tend to read it through the wrong lens. We tend to look for punishment instead of Grace, and we tend to take verses out of context.
It's interesting, because I have heard Mark DeJesus on his YouTube channel talk about this. And he actually says sometimes we need to read the Bible less when we are struggling. And this is because we need to focus on learning about the love and grace safety of God. And if we keep getting stressed out and keep striving to just read the Bible more and more, and we aren't able to do that.
When we have OCD, here are the deep truths that we really need to learn:
1:) We need to look at God differently. With OCD, we tend to have a punishment-based idea of our relationship with him. This is just completely wrong!
2:) We need to understand the great safety that we have in God. It says all over Psalms that he is a place of refuge. And yet, when we have OCD, we spend all of our time being afraid of him.
3:) We need to understand, the love and grace of God. When we have OCD, we are stuck in perfectionism and performance-driven behavior. We don't understand how Grace applies to us.
4:) We need to understand how God is a Father to us. When we have OCD, we don't understand the reference for a father and a child. We really don't know what that means at all. But we need a deeper understanding of the tender, compassionate, protective love of God.
Just keep your Bible reading small and comforting. Consider doing something like taking two or three Bible verses that remind you that you are loved and safe and protected. And try focusing on them for a few weeks perhaps. You will know what will work best for you. :):)
God doesn't need us to get a certain amount of pages read in our Bibles. He doesn't need you trying to please him by working hard.
Ephesians 3:18-19 says, "And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”
God wants us to come to understanding of how much he loves us!
His love is greater than we can imagine!!!
When I look at my life, and I look at the things above that I mentioned to you, I'm still at the BEGINNING stages of learning those things. I still feel like I have major holes in my life in those areas. And I have a great thirst to be able to come to a deeper understanding there. But that's the advantage of OCD. It forces us to understand the truth of God at a deeper level.
