Relapse

Hi all, I’ve never posted on here before. I got diagnosed with OCD about a year ago. My therapist is incredible and I did start taking some SRI’s which also made my symptoms really go down. However the last week it’s like I’m back to my old symptoms of insane anxiety and not being able to sleep. I want to see if anyone has also experienced this and basically want to know if it gets better again. I’m terrified of having to change my dose for my SRI’s it doesn’t sit right with me. Thanks ❣️

It will always get better! My mom always says this to me about my medication: “Would you feel guilty about taking medicine for a sore throat?” If you have to increase your medication to feel better that is totally okay, but if you don’t feel comfortable with doing that that’s also okay. There isn’t just one way to feel better. It’s easy to feel like you’re back at square one when you relapse, but remember all the progress you made since being diagnosed and lean into everything you’ve learned. Being “recovered” isn’t a permanent space and there’s always a possibility of struggling with your ocd again. Whats important is to remember you have overcome this before and will do it again. As someone who has been where you are, it does get better! Keep working with your therapist and use your non engagement responses. Sending you positive vibes!!

You're not alone I am currently dealing with a relapse myself. My symptoms were absolutely unbearable in 2023 so I understand the fear. It will be okay though whether you have to change your dose or not. Continue to do ERP and communicate your needs to your therapist. We will get through this!

I suggest going back to your therapist for a check in and probably more ERP therapy. Which is normal—you will relapse throughout your life as there’s no cure for OCD. But the goal is to have those relapses be shorter and shorter in its active timeframe.

Hey! I am on week 7 of Luvox and I had periods of time where I was feeling better then suddenly worse again. It just kind of comes with the territory of getting your body adjusted to something new. It’s normal for you to have an increase in anxiety/mood swings while you adjust. Also, I recently found out that there is a genetic test offered by Psychiatrists that will analyze your body chemistry and tell you which SSRI is most likely to be compatible/well tolerated for you. I am going to keep trying Luvox for awhile, but if I don’t see the results I want, I am going to do that test and see which one I should be on.

@Iamnotmythoughts Wow that’s good to know! Does a psychiatrist do your dosing for your meds? Or does your general doc. I have Kaiser and my general doc does mine which I don’t know if that’s the best.

@Gina M I talk to my therapist about medicine but he can’t prescribe medicine. So we talk in session about what he thinks would work best for me based on my mental health and then I go to my primary care doctor and ask her to prescribe what he recommends. I don’t yet have a psychiatrist, but if Luvox doesn’t work for me I will look into getting one who will be able to order the genetic SSRI test. Apparently general doctors can’t order that test, it has to be a psychiatrist specifically.

I am strong. But today is hard

Hi friends. I like to think that most days I am in the drivers seat of my ocd, I’ve came a long way with ERP and medication. However, today has been a rough day. My ocd and anxiety both seem to be kicking back in lately. I’ve been dealing with a waxing and waning symptom flare for about a year now. I have never switched my medication. I’ve only went up in dosage, I am now on the maximum dose of my SSRI. (200mg Zoloft) and I’ll say that for the past year it has not packed the punch as it used to. It worked really well for the first 4 years. I did have to titrate up in dosage over that time. I am still functioning, in school, sleeping and working so that says a lot. However, it’s still hard and getting in the way of living life at my fullest potential. (So much time spent thinking about things that don’t even pertain to my life) I have been better than this. OCD and anxiety used to be maybe a once a month occurrence for me. Now it is half the month. Does anyone have any experience with their medication pooping out on them and not working as well? Or having to change from one medication to another? All your advice would be helpful. Thank you!

Hey Everyone, I have been recently diagnosed with OCD within the past year. Finding this information out gave me an answer to so many years of struggle and feeling alone. I have had ups and downs and have been successful for a long time along this path of my own. Unfortunately, I experienced a massive panic attack 3 years ago that hospitalized me and has left me feeling at the 'start' again, but this time it feels worse than it ever has before. Anything that puts me potentially by myself or having to do anything by myself I cannot fathom, I can barely make it to the gas station at the corner of my house alone. I have been in therapy, went through EMDR/ACT and CBT. I was doing great for a little bit and even made one appointment about 10 minutes away from my home all alone by myself (also note I am in a new area completely that I just moved too). I was on medication at this time *lexapro 20MG*, I am no longer on it due to my bloodwork being extremely abnormal for my age. Now that I am no longer on it - I have fear creeping in that the lexapro kept me sane and that I cannot cope without it. I understand this is not the case entirely but there is something in me that believes that to be true. Long story short, I am looking for individuals who have had the same experience as me and could give me some hope into getting back to my normal routine (even knowing I have OCD now). I just want to be independent again and not burden my loved ones and learn to be okay with myself. Thanks in advance!

Newbie

Hello everyone I was recently diagnosed with OCD. I’ve spent the last ten years battle extreme anxiety and obsessive thoughts. I recently started taking Prozac. For once in my life my mind feels calm. However, they just upped my dose and my anxiety is bad and I’m having trouble sleeping this is week 2 on the medication. Anyone else experienced this?
